WHICH BODYSUIT SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY BABY?

Bodysuits as baby underwear are so much a part of your baby's everyday life that you might be forgiven for forgetting that bodysuits with poppers were invented by Petit Bateau in the '80s to replace shirts that used to ride up on babies' tummies. In the first few days after coming into the world, newborn babies can't regulate their own temperature, so you need to cover them up well and protect their tummies to keep them comfortable, digesting things properly and sleeping well. Which should you choose for your baby? We support you in choosing the right bodysuits for your child, depending on the season, their age and the materials.

WHICH OPENING?

Wrapover bodysuits

Wrapover bodysuits: a bodysuit mainly for newborns and babies up to 12 months. Your baby's head is actually quite fragile in the first few months. With a newborn bodysuit that opens up fully, you don't need to move their head around when changing them. This kind of bodysuit is easy for parents to handle. Also, the double thickness at the front due to the wrapover design is also doubly thick to soothe your baby and provide them with the warmth they need to regulate their body temperature.

WHICH OPENING?

Envelope neck bodysuits

Envelope neck bodysuits: once your baby is bigger, these take over from newborn bodysuits. This bodysuit has a special feature – a wide envelope neck inspired by American GIs who would slip their clothes on without taking their helmets off. They could do this because of this famously wide round neck opening. That is what makes this opening the most practical for slipping clothes on over your baby's head without squeezing them. It's also faster! The lack of pressure on their tummy is also helpful as it means nothing gets in the way when they begin to crawl.

WHAT KIND OF FABRIC?

Bodysuits are an indispensable undergarment for babies. They usually wear them both day and night. That's why their bodysuits need to be made from stretchy, soft fabric that feels pleasant against the skin, so your baby feels comfortable and not irritated by their clothing. Cotton is the usual go-to for this as it's comfy, hard-wearing and high quality. This fabric breathes and has good freedom of movement. You should always avoid synthetic fabrics and instead opt for natural, organic fabrics to prevent allergies and rashes. For this reason, Petit Bateau has a range of bodysuits made from 100% cotton, and even OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton too.

WHAT DESIGN?

Baby clothes usually have long sleeves as newborns don't have the ability to regulate their temperature properly. Long-sleeved bodysuits are therefore essential for every season. It's a timeless option that goes under winter pullovers or T-shirts when the weather is milder. However, sometimes we can end up wrapping up babies too warmly when temperatures rise. When it's hot, short-sleeved or sleeveless bodysuits or ones with straps are recommended.
